The Greenpower Challenge is a national, and now international, competition in which students design, build and race an electric kit car. Currently there are 700+ schools in the UK and 10 000+ students taking part, from primary to university. With the support of school and the FONS, we have been able to buy the car in its 'kit' form, a work-shed, tools and the racing gear (helmets, overalls, gloves).
The aim is to run the car for the longest distance on a single charge of two batteries. Heats are run around the country with the top teams qualifying for the international finals in October at Goodwood.
The NS team competed for the first time on Sunday 12 May at the Lotus test track, Hethel. Iris Bellingall, Theo Chapallaz, Roman Paterson and Kirti Suhas were present on the day, with other L5, M5 and U5 pupils helping to build the car and develop the team over the past year and a half at the weekly (or more often!) meetings. The team came 11th out of 35 schools in the first heat, with Theo recording the fastest lap of the heat, and 21 out of 31 schools in the second heat. Norwich School are ranked 46th nationally out of 141! This is a great success, especially for a first time competing! More of the team will be driving the car in the September heats.
Below are what the pupils had to say about it;
"Led by Ms Ling we started this project last Michelmas Term, from H1, and then moving to our Greenpower workshed, in the Lent Term. We have made slow but steady progress, deciding to skip last year's race and focus on this year. Mr Coltman started helping us this year, and he was a massive part of us being ready for this year's race." - Kirti Suhas
"After much work, it was race day. We got there in the morning, ready to set up. We got ready for scrutineering, all ready apart from one crucial feature. A working motor. It was a race against time to get our car ready for Practice 1! With the help of the all knowing Town Close team, we got our car running. We finally got our drivers around the track, and got ready for race 1. Theo Chapallaz started Heat 1, followed by Roman Paterson and Iris Bellingall. We got a great first result, just shy of the top ten out of 36 cars! Our second race went well, placing 21st out of 36. Overall a promising start for the Norwich School F24 team." - Theo Chapallaz

We are now looking to improve performance so the car can be more competitive in the next race. We are focussing on motor cooling, battery efficiency and drive strategy. Meantime, the team is looking for sponsorship, in addition the support that they have already received from the school and Friends of Norwich School, to help finance their activities going forward.
