Horatio Society

Horatio Society

The Horatio Society is named after the school’s most illustrious Old Norvicensians, Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson, whose statues calmly watches the hubbub of school life from its elevated position in the Upper Close.

The Horatio Society is run by a small committee of Upper Sixth pupils, under the guidance of a dedicated member of staff, currently Mr Bedford-Payne.

Its principal aim is to improve the experience of the Upper Sixth cohort’s last, emotional, fun-packed year at school. Through an established Leavers’ Programme, and with help from staff in the Development Team and the Sixth Form Office, the Horatio Society ensures all Upper Sixth pupils leave school in style and create proud Old Norvicensians in ‘The Class of ….’ each year.

"Hi, I’m Jacob, and I’m this year's president of the Horatio society. I joined the school in Lower 2 (Year 3). For A-levels I take psychology, business studies and 2D design with the aspiration to study fashion marketing at university. I love to perform and have been part of every senior musical and plenty of plays. My role as president of Horatio Society means I’m the party planner of U6 and I’ve been enjoying organising events to celebrate our final year at school. Something I’m really excited for this year is doing the year book, I’m sure it will be very memorable!"

Events

During the year the Society helps to organise a black tie Horatio Dinner as well as the Leavers’ Day fun on the last day of teaching in mid May. This memorable day involves photos, a Cathedral Service, fancy dress, a BBQ, inflatables fun and outside games – a brilliant way of letting your hair down before the hard grind of exams. Post exams, the Society helps to organise the Leavers’ Ball where parents, leavers and staff share all the excitement of the very last day at school together until the wee small hours.

Longer Term

Finally, as a life-long memento of each leavers’ time at school, the Horatio Society helps plan and deliver the fabulous Year Book to encapsulate each leaver’s Norwich School career.

The intent of these activities is to foster a cohort with strong bonds, who will remain closely knit throughout their life beyond the Cathedral Close. By remaining in touch with the school and with each other, they can offer each other meaningful help with life’s inevitable highs and lows and lifelong fellowship.
