Mathematics

"Mathematics itself is a subject built upon thousands of years of profound thought around number, logic and measure. A pupil’s journey through Mathematics allows them to experience this, from the concept of calculating with number itself to analysing problems involving rates of change. To say that Mathematics is just about sums, mental arithmetic, percentages or number crunching is incomplete; Mathematics asks “why should things be true?” – understand why, explore the unknown, conquer novel problems and reap from the thought processes you are exposed to on your journey."

Head of Mathematics

The mathematics department aims to promote deep interest and curiosity in all aspects of mathematics.

Above all, we aim to:
Engender an enjoyment and love of mathematics

Firstly, by teaching:

  • Lessons that provide intrigue as to why things may be correct, through non-trivial observations around the material, and;
  • Lessons that promote problem solving using different aspects of the subject.
  • Secondly, we aim to promote learning by:
  • Instilling confidence to attempt and solve problems from unfamiliar context
  • Using mathematics correctly and in a way that communicates ideas effectively.
  • Develop strong relationships with the pupils we teach, that are beneficial for their learning.
  • Mathematics itself is promoted as an excellent choice for further study and as a very useful companion to other subject areas.
