As part of our commitment to public culture and creative endeavour in the city, we were delighted to welcome back on site the well-respected Norfolk Contemporary Art Society (n-cas) on 16 October 2024.
Senior Research Fellow at Norwich University of the Art, Carl Rowe was in conversation with Richard Calvocoressi CBE, legendary museum and gallery curator and art historian. Having served as assistant keeper of modern art at the Tate Gallery, he was appointed director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art for two decades before moving to the directorship of the Henry Moore Foundation, and in 2015 became a senior curator at the Gagosian Gallery.
Conversation focussed on Richard’s curation of the highly acclaimed exhibition in London entitled Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews that won many plaudits for its contextualizing of key works by four era-defining artists. This was accompanied by a close analysis of a beautifully made film of the exhibition, featuring many of the best-known works on show. Focus of discussion was on the four artists’ camaraderie and interrelationships and on the intimate relationships between artist and sitter.
The evening concluded with a similar analysis of the exhibition ‘Henry Moore and Greece’ that Richard is currently curating in Athens. This is the first exhibition of the artist’s work in Greece in twenty years and features a selection of work spanning Moore’s phenomenal career. Discussion centred around the artist’s fascination with ancient Greek art, which he developed during a trip to Greece in 1951.
A large audience of n-cas members, NUA/UEA students, Norwich School pupils, parents, ONs and staff quizzed Richard in the Q&A and over refreshments afterwards and it was clearly a huge privilege to hear from an expert of such pedigree on site.
The next talk from n-cas in the Blake Studio on Wednesday 6th November is to be given by highly accomplished and quirky animators Peter Martin and Jon Dunleavy. Peter is a recognised local animator and sculptor, and Jon is an award-winning filmmaker. Both are animation course leads at NUA.
