Poppy Francis, U5, has just been signed by Norwich City Women! To celebrate this achievement and her love of football, we asked her a few questions.
How long have you been playing football?
I’ve played football for 10 years, starting when I was 6 for Attleborough Town boys’ team and then when I was 9 I went to a CSF Soccer Camp and I got spotted there and asked to trial for the academy.
How long have you been at the school?
Since Lower 1.
Did you get to play much at school?
In the Lower School I did occasionally but I have not played any in the senior school yet, but I am looking forward to playing for the 1st team this season.
Can you tell me a little bit about the academy?
I started when I was 9 and progressed through each age group in the academy and now through to the Women’s team. The academy has great coaches and the opportunity to play in matches and tournaments around the country. They also do a tour every year which was a great experience for me, the last two being abroad. I feel like it’s the best place to be if you’re in Norfolk and wanting to play more and at a higher standard.
How much do you train per week?
It was 2 times a week in the academy and now I train 3 times a week with the women’s team, so Mondays Tuesdays and Thursdays in the evenings.
Is it tricky to fit this into your school life?
It has been when I have had a lot of matches but I think I manage it quite well especially with doing homework.
Do you play any other sports?
Yes I play hockey!
In terms of last term, being the hockey season at school, was that quite intense for you?
Yes it was but the school and the club were very understanding.
And what do you like about football?
It’s nice to be a part of a team and I’ve done it since I was very young and as a family its something we, especially me and my dad, just love!
How did getting signed by Norwich City come about?
I started training with the Women’s team in June. We train at Colney where the coaching and facilities are brilliant and then recently, I signed, which means I can be selected to play in matches.
And you had your debut recently?
Yes I did!
How did that go?
It was in a County Cup Quarter Final against Aylsham and I think it went pretty well! It’s a lovely environment everyone is so nice and welcoming and we won the game 6-1 so that was obviously a bonus! It was nice to get on the pitch and show what I can do!
How did you feel about it? Nervous?
I wasn’t that nervous as I have trained for a long time and I know everyone well. I think any nerves had gone after my first few touches.
Are you one of the younger players?
I think I am the youngest yes! There is someone else my age but I think there’s something like 6 days between us!
And what are your future hopes?
I want to play to the highest level I can whilst I still enjoy playing and see how far I can get.
And would you want to play professionally?
That would be really cool and I would love it to happen but as long as I am still enjoying playing football, to whatever level that is, I probably will play it for quite a long time!
Have you thought about coaching?
I haven’t given it much thought at the moment but it could be a possibility in the future.
Women’s football is a growing sport what would you say to any young women who are interested in giving it a go?
Just give it a go and find a local club. There are more girls’ grassroot teams that you can play for now but for me, I have always played with boys and it wasn’t till I was older that I started playing in a girls team as well, so I would say find what’s best for you and give it go!
And how was your experience of playing in a boys team?
When I started there were no local girls teams so playing with the boys was my option but it was really good and I’ve never had any problems with it, I think people are a lot more understanding now and just give it a go and if it doesn’t work out then find another team.
