The Inters brought the infamous Little Shop of Horrors to the Blake Studio and it was a roaring success. Taking on such an iconic musical was ambitious but the Inters pupils and director, Eloise Cubbin, did an impressive job of bringing Downtown Skidrow to the Cathedral Close.
Little Shop of Horrors tells the tale of the nerdy florist assistant Seymour (Louis Baker) who is completely enamoured with Audrey (Daisy Sexton). Seymour works for Mr Mushnik, a comical character, who was hilariously played by George Gaid and it is his passion for plants that sees Seymour comes across a mysterious plant who has a very specific appetite…
A notable aspect of the production was the outstanding giant plant ‘Audrey II’ created by the school’s very own Gavin Bromley. Audrey II was characterised by this model but also by Middle 5 pupil, Levite Oyelakin, wearing a green suite. The model often mimicked Levite’s actions (through Gavin Bromley puppeteering) and they worked in conjunction to bring to life the horror and humour of this character perfectly.
Little Shop of Horrors is jam-packed with musical classics which were brilliantly performed by the Inters. Notable performances came in the touching rendition of Suddenly Seymour and the hilariously horrifying Dentist!.
The show has demonstrated the quality of theatre that can be created in house, using the various skill sets from our creatives to create an outstanding piece of work.
Director, Eloise Cubbin, commented:
“One of the things that excited me the most about putting on this production was bringing to life the vibrant, retro aesthetic combined with a score that fuses rock, Motown, and Broadway styles. The creative team has worked tirelessly to create a visually stunning set that captures the gritty, urban feel of Skid Row while also allowing the fantastical elements of the story to shine through. The iconic Audrey II, with its increasingly menacing presence, is a character in its own right, brought to life through innovative puppetry and design from our very own Drama Department.
Bringing this production to life has been a labour of love and a true community effort. The dedication and creativity of the cast and production team have been extraordinary. Their passion and hard work have infused every rehearsal and performance with energy and enthusiasm. I have felt so lucky to be able to work with such talent!”
