26 February 2025 saw the very welcome return to site of the Norfolk Cambridge Society (NCS) for their 22nd public lecture.
The evening was kicked off with customary eloquence by the NCS’s Geoffrey Smart. Winners’ awards were presented by their Chair, Simon Brickles, to two sixth form pupils, this being the culmination of their rigorous annual Year 13 Essay Competition. Otis from East Norfolk Sixth Form College was highly commended for his innovative essay on animation. Grace from Norwich School was commended for her essay on the application of AI in Pulmonary Artery Hypertension.
We were delighted to hear from Professor Catherine Rowett, former Member of the European Parliament, Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia and now Green Party councillor on Norfolk County Council. She spoke with great knowledge and perspicacity on the intriguing topic “Forgotten Truths – Powerful Lessons for Today from Ancient Greek Philosophy”.
Professor Rowett obtained her BA, MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge and has held research fellowships at both Cambridge and Oxford. She has written seven books and many articles and chapters across topics in ancient and modern philosophy and theology.
A substantial audience in the school refectory of parents, NCS members, pupils, staff, alumni and friends heard her address a selection of themes in her talk concerning property, belonging, social and planetary well-being, work, leisure, and rewards— to help us rethink can challenge our assumptions, all informed by Classical Greek teachings. A lively Q&A ensued, and conversations spilled over into refreshments in the Blake Studio.
The school remains delighted to host the illustrious NCS who manage to entice speakers of the highest quality to deliver thought-provoking topics on matters of timeless importance. Their next talk at Norwich School is to be held in September and will be given by illustrious Old Norvicensian Professor Charles Forsdick, Drapers Professor of French at the University of Cambridge. Tickets will be on sale during the summer and Thursday 11 September is the date to diarise for this lecture.
