M5 3D Design pupils recently went on a curriculum research trip to Great Yarmouth.
The aim of the trip: looking, recording and seeing the value of letting observations of the everyday feed into their design development work for their current typographic inspired chair design project. The trip started with a visual scavenger hunt around the dock areas, then a visit to the Time and Tide Museum and finally some time spent looking at the typography and material use around the Pleasure Beach and amusement areas… and possibly some chips and doughnuts might have been eaten!
“It made me realise there are so many shapes and letter forms in the spaces we walk through every day. Looking in this way helped me realise new pathways of inspiration to take into my work. I especially enjoyed looking at type and colour in a new way.”
In the afternoon we returned to Norwich to visit the Sainsbury Centre to see their permanent collection and their current exhibition. This was an amazing exhibition for the pupils looking at craft, construction, design and making from around the world.
“All the patterns, textures and colours were so vivid and precise. My visual research into the detailing on the objects has helped me consider how I might include these influences into my own work”
The pupils were engaged and a joy to take on the trip, and also many thanks to Carl, our amazing bus driver, for looking after us and taking on this magical mystery tour of Great Yarmouth!
